Movie vs. Movie: Survival of the Slashers « Read Less
In celebration of the anticipated slasher flick remake Sorority House (Release Date: Sep 11, 2009), I matched up some of the best classic slashers against their modern remakes for a battle royale!
Psycho: 1960 vs. 1998
Summary: Marion wants to marry Sam, but they can't afford a wedding. She embezzles $40,000 and runs off to California to get hitched. On her way, she gets caught in a storm. Luckily, there's a motel nearby where she checks in to wait it out.
Original:
Director: Alfred Hitchcock
Starring: Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh
Tagline: A new- and altogether different- screen excitement!!!
Remake:
Director: Gus Van Sant
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Anne Heche
Tagline: Check in. Unpack. Relax. Take a shower.
Slashers 101: Psycho is proclaimed as "The Mother of All Slashers," but it doesn't get that title for defining the genre as much as it received it for paving the way for psycho killers with sharp objects everywhere.
My Two-Cents: I'm not even going to try to argue for the remake. I mean, trading Anthony Price for funny guy Vince Vaughn and the bombshell Janet Leigh for...Anne Heche? Plus it was essentially a shot-for-shot remake, it didn't re-imagine anything or present anything new apart from the original. To top it all off, I'd MUCH rather bleed chocolate syrup than corn syrup. (Pun intended) Verdict: 1960
